If you are like me and love "junking" then it's time to start planning which Vintage Shows you want to attend this year. To help get you started, below is a list of some of my favorites and ones my Sister and I are hoping to attend:

First up is "Retreat Antique and Vintage Market" April 28th 2012 in Anacortes, Washington. A must see show hosted by the very talented duo of Deb and Bob Kennedy. Check out their website for all the details. I attended their 2011 fall show and it was well worth the trip! Looking forward to attending again this year!

I have never attended this show before, however I have heard really good things about their fall 2011 show so looking forward to attending their spring show.

"The Farm Chicks Antiques Show" held annually at the Fairgrounds Spokane Washington Saturday, June 2nd: 10am-6pm & Sunday, June 3rd: 10am-4pm. General admission tickets will be offered for pre-sale from 3pm-5pm on Friday, June 1st, at the ticket windows at the fairgrounds. I have attended this very popular show twice before and it is an excellent show. With approx. 200 vendors it offers something for everyone. Best to purchase a pre-sale ticket on the Friday before the show if you can or get there early Saturday morning of the show due to long line-ups as a well attended show.

Barn House Presents "A Vintage Country Marketplace & Music Festival" July 28th, 2012 Battleground Washington. I attended this show a couple of years ago and it was great! Came back with wonderful vintage inspired goodies! I heard that the show last year was even better so definately a priority on my list for this year! D.I.Y. Burlap Wreaths

I am drawm to anything made out of Burlap. I love the rustic look it provides especially when paired with other textured material such as linen, lace and unbleached cotton. I recently saw a burlap wreath in a Christmas Decorating Magazine, where they took Burlap Ribbon and looped and tied it to a wire form to create a wreath. I loved the idea but not having any burlap ribbon on hand I decided to make one of my own using a piece of tighter weave Burlap material. I cut strips of the fabric approximately 15 inches long at two different widths (large and small). I then made each stip into a loose ruffle. Once I had all my stripes loosely ruffled I started by glueing the wider strips using a glue gun to my form (which was a used wood embroidery hoop). Once covered I then added a second row on top with the smaller width ruffled strip to create depth and fullness. I finished it off with three flowers made from burlap and a burlap bow at the top. In the picture you can see a crown ornament hung in the centre but this is optional.

Feather Trees

I have a real fondness for Feather Trees and always bring them in for Easter, Halloween and of course Christmas. They add such a whimical touch to your holiday decor and because of their small size are very versatile. You could have one in every room of your house if you wanted to...even the bedroom. They come in a variety of colors and sizes and their wide spaced branches make them easy to decorate . Many companies now make ornaments specifically designed for Feather Trees.

It is said that the first Feather Christmas trees were created in Germany around the mid to late eighteen hundreds and are regarded as one of the first types of artificial Christmas trees. These first artificial trees were, in part, a response to growing environmental concerns in the late 19th century concerning deforestation associated with the harvest of Christmas trees in Germany. The tradition of feather Christmas trees was brought to North America by German immigrants and were crafted until 1930 when they fell out of favor. However I am happy to say that in recent years they are enjoying a come back. Antique Feather Trees from Germany are highly collectible and as such can be very expensive and often are not in the best condition. However a great alternative is to purchase a reproduction Feather Tree as the cost is much less. Made in the same traditional way using real turkey feathers you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

It is recommented that you store your Feather Tree in a climate controlled area such as a closet. Heat can make the feathers brittle and the dampness found in basements will cause mildew. It is also recommended that you store your Feather Tree with the branches open if you can. They can be stored in the closed up position, but as the branches are made of floral wire, each time they are bent to open or close it can weaken them. A box will allow for air flow around the tree and cedar chips keep moths away. Or cover with a pillowcase. Save the silicone packets from shoe boxes to throw in with your tree to absorb any moisture. If stored properly, they can last for hundreds of years to be passed down and enjoyed from generation to generation.

"Nordic Noel"

I have always been a fan of the French Nordic style so decided that this year I would decorate the store for Christmas in this style. My husband is from Norway and I have actually had the pleasure of spending a Christmas there. Christmas traditions in Norway are very different from ours. "God Jul" as they say in Norway features a Norwegian Santa Claus called "Julenisse" who wears a long red stocking cap and has a long white beard. He comes to the house with a sack of presents on Christmas Eve.

Christmas food traditions in Norway often feature potatoes, red cabbage, salted lamb's ribs, ribbed pork and sausage although with modern times Turkey has now crept into the dinner menu for some families. Deserts range from cloudberry cream, rice pudding to crème caramel.

On Christmas Eve family and friends join hands to walk around the Christmas tree, singing carols. The children anxiously await the knock on the door, announcing the arrival of Julenissen with his sack full of gifts. Before he takes the presents out of the sack he always asks "Are there any good children here?" I loved experiencing the Christmas traditions of Norway and try to maintain some of those same traditions when celebrating Christmas with my family at home in Canada.

Road Trip....

This past weekend my sister and I attended the first "Island Retreat Antiques and Vintage Martket" in Anacortes, Washington. This market was hosted by the very talented duo Deb and Bob Kennedy of Retreat Design. Check out their blog at: http://retreatdesign.blogspot.com/ . Both my sister and I really enjoyed this show and even managed to bring back a few goodies ......for myself and for the store. One of my treasures purchased at the show is this vintage inspired Santos from "Alley Cats Antiques". I knew she had to come back to Victoria with me!

Anacortes is a lovely quaint town. We also enjoyed checking out a number of antique shops just down the street from where the show was held.

If I could have gotten this baby in my car it would have come home with me as well!

Now that summer is officially over, I spent this past week getting the store ready for fall and Halloween. I think I've said this before....but I'll say it again....fall is my favorite time of the year. Especially when the weather is nice like it has been these past couple of weeks. Painted Furniture

I have to say that I do prefer painted furniture over natural wood. I love how the painting, distressing and antiquing brings out the details... especially if the piece is ornate. Over the past 5 years since opening my store I have painted a lot of furniture. So many I can't remember them all. I often forget to take before and after pictures so must try and remember to do this more often.

It always amazes me to see what transformation has taken place with just paint! I only use acrylic paint (easy clean-up) on my furniture. I love the worn look so will often do a little distressing and then finish up with some clear and dark wax. A number of months ago I was visting the "Miss Mustard Seed" blog http://missmustardseed.blogspot.com/ and came across a posting about a new paint product she had tried and just couldn't say enough wonderful things about it. It turns out this new paint is "Annie Sloan Chalk Paint" (not to be confused with chalk board paint).

Annie Sloan is from Oxford England and wrote the book "Creating the French Look" http://www.anniesloan.com/index.html . She developed her own line of paint to answer the need she had for a paint which would have many uses; from acting like limewash to looking like old painted furniture and had a good range of colour that could be extended by the user.

I love this piece....made to look old and worn

I have since tried this paint myself and I have to say it truly is a wonderful product.You can use it on any surface; wood, metal,indoors and out. There is also no need to prime or prep before painting. It covers usually in one coat. It does give you a matt finish and feels a little rough to the touch when first painted on after drying. However the magic happens when you sand it down. You end up with a soft smooth velvety finish. Finish off your piece with a little distressing, a coat of clear wax which gives it a nice light sheen and dark wax as needed for some antiqing. It comes in wonderful colors with names like Old White, Paris Grey, French Linen and Duck Egg Blue.

Goodbye Summer....Hello Fall

Well summer is almost over, not sure where the time has gone. This year our summer weather wasn't all that great but we did have a fairly nice July and August. I have a feeling our fall weather is going to be really nice, giving us a few more months of sunshine. I love the fall, it is my most favorite season. I also love to decorate for the fall. There are so many colors to choose from ......yellow, orange, green, tan and brown are all inspiring colors for fall decorating. Country Living magazine on-line http://www.countryliving.com/homes/how-to-get-the-look/decorating-for-fall-1005 recommends extending the excitement and pleasure you feel at this change of season by creating a cozy fall-inspired setting to enjoy outdoors.

Indigenous materials available now--leaves, rose hips, and some flowers, such as hydrangea (my favorite flower) -will last well after they are gathered. And most of them are probably in your backyard. In autumn, plant colors often peak, yielding the perfect materials for stunning, one-of-a-kind displays. So get outside, look around, and bring some of the beauty home, where you can continue enjoying it for many days to come.

Brightly hued autumn leaves offer a season-appropriate alternative to a floral bouquet this time of year. Start with a pretty vintage container in which you've placed a water-soaked oasis block as your foundation. Arrange your autumn leaves, alternating with rugosa rose hips--or even roses, if yours are still in bloom. With the cooler weather, colors are likely to be at their most dramatic.

Create this wreath using a grapevine wreath as your foundation. Adorn with any greenery that you like, such as hydrangea blossoms and rugosa rose hips (above) for a pretty combination. For best results, keep materials in proportion to the size of the wreath. Apply cuttings while fresh, making them easier to work with. Use florist's wire (or a hot-glue gun, if stems are very "woody") to affix cuttings, tucking in stems as you go, until wreath is covered on its front and sides. Using florist's wire, attach a loop to the back top of wreath, for hanging. Display away from direct sunlight.

I love this idea of displaying winter squash under a glass cloche, elevated on a cake plate. For a vertical display, invert the cloche to add the squash, then cover the opening with a plate or cake stand and turn it right side up.

What ever your decorating style, draw on the colors from Mother Nature, use what's in your garden and have fun decorating for fall!

Kiona of "Mavons Recreations" the host of the event has lined up 10-15 great vendors who will be offering a variety of lovely and unique items from baked goods, handmade jewellry to refurbished country furniture and everything in between. I'll be bringing some great things including french farmhouse style cushions, vintage tablecloths, handmade aprons, flour sack tea towels, hand stamped lavender sachets and small vintage furniture. Eva will also be bringing some very unique and creative items as only she can do!

July is for Lavender.....

I always look forward to July, the month my Lavender comes into bloom. It's lovely fragrance permeates throughout my garden. For harvesting the flower, look closely at your plant. You will notice that the stem has 3 colors. The top is darker green, the middle will be lighter green and the bottom brown. Cut just above the lighter green area. Do not cut the brown area. This is where the plant will regenerate. Acording to http://www.aromatherapy-at-home.com/information-about-lavender.html the best time to harvest lavender for sachets and potpourri is when the flowers on the stalks are starting to open. They advise that Lavender should be harvested in the morning when temperatures are cooler, as the heat of the day causes the fragrant oils to dissipate. The faster lavender dries, the better the colors of the flowers and the fragrance will be preserved, so try to harvest them after the dew has dried from the stalk. The lavender is ready to cut when it looks like this (see picture below)

As already mentioned Lavender flowers when harvested are great for making your own sachets. However try something a little different by making a Lavender wand. There are also a number of "Lavender Festivals" held during the month of July. On Vancouver Island a great one to attend is held on July 30th at the "Damali Lavender Farm" in the Cowichan Valley. I hope the day is warm and sunny (which we haven't had many of these days) so I can sit and enjoy sipping on their "Lavender infused Lemonade"!

"Farm Chicks" Road Trip 2011

The "girls" as I call them (Eva, my sister Corinne and Maria) and I left last Thursday to attend the Farm Chicks Show held on Saturday/Sunday (June 4 and 5th) in Spokane Washington. After taking the ferry to the mainland, we crossed the border and drove down through Bellingham to stay Thursday night at Everett, Washington. Getting up early Friday morning we made our way across Washington state and arrived at Spokane around 2:45 pm. Our intention was to get to the Spokane Fairgrounds by 3:00 pm for the early selling of tickets for the show so we didn't have to wait in a long line-up Saturday morning. After spending the first night in our hotel (that experience is a whole other story, lets just say I will never stay at that hotel again) we arrived back very early at the Spokane Fairgrounds Saturday morning (7:00 am) to line up.

As luck would have it we were second in the green line (people who bought early tickets). It didn't take long before long line-ups were forming. Unfortunately we had a bit of a wait as the show didn't start until 10:00 am but it is so worth getting there early. However the time went by fairly quickly as we waited patiently in line visiting with others in the morning sun asking questions like "Where are you from?", "Have you attended before" and "What items were they hoping to find that day". I think we all felt like kindred spirits waiting in anticipation of what goodies awaited us inside that arena. They decided to let our line in early because we had purchased our tickets the day before so at 9:45 am the gate was opened and we all made a mad dash to the front doors of the arena. This is only a small sampling of what was offered from the over 200 vendors who creatively displayed their wares for all to enjoy!

We browsed, we bought but most of all we had FUN!

"The Farm Chicks" Show- June 4th and 5th

Who are the Farm Chicks you ask? Well the "Farm Chicks" was founded by Serena http://thefarmchicks.typepad.com/ with her best friend, who has since retired from the business. Each year, the first weekend in June the "Farm Chicks Antiques Show" is held. What began as a little sale in a friend's barn in 2002, became The Farm Chicks Antiques Show with antiques, vintage objects, handmade goods, and wonderful vendors. I went for the first time a couple of years ago and am so excited to be attending the show again this year with my sister Corinne and dear friend Eva. If you haven't been before you should give it a try, it is well worth the trip and loads of fun!

May's Flower "Lily of the Valley"

The Lily of the Valley is one of my favorite flowers. Last year I was even able to dry some for an everlasting bouquet. Steeped in tradition the Lily of the Valley represents "return of happiness". Did you notice that Kate's wedding bouquet included Lily of the Valley!

The "Lily of the Valley" is also the official flower of May in France. Traditionally, Lily of the Valley or muguet as it is known in France is sold in the streets on May 1. The reason for this is that on May 1st, 1561, King Charles IX of France received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm. He decided to offer a lily of the valley each year to the ladies of the court. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became custom on the 1st of May, to give a sprig of lily of the valley, a symbol of springtime. The government permits individuals and workers' organisations to sell them free of taxation. It is also traditional for the lady receiving the spray of lily of valley to give a kiss in return!

I am so happy Spring is finally here although by the weather you wouldn't know it. Oh well it feels like Spring inside the store with new products arriving weekly it seems. Just in are three new products I am excited to offer:

1. New Lavender products such as Lavender Linen Water, Lavender Hand and Foot Cream, Lavender Face and Body Spritz from a locally owned lavender farm located right here on Vancouver Island. This Lavender Farm is called "Damali". They even host a lavender festival each year at the end of July. Check out their website at http://www.damali.ca . We all know that Lavender has many medicinal purposes but I just love the way it smells!

2. Organic handmade soap in wonderful heavenly scents such as "Morning in Provence", "Marie's Roses", "Eucalyptus Mint" and "Paris Market Summer Place". Check out the wrapping....isn't it great!

Easter Brunch Recipe-Blueberry Baked French Toast

This blueberry filled make ahead breakfast or brunch recipe is perfect for a holiday morning or any time you want to celebrate. Ingredients

6 slices of sturdy, thick-cut white bread (about 1-inch thick)

2 teaspoons butter, for pan

8 large eggs

3 cups milk

3 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup blueberries

1/2 cup maple syrup

Cooking Instructions

Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange slices on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish, overlapping the slices.

In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt. Whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure to cover the bread evenly with the egg mixture. Gently press down bread to insure that bread is fully submerged. Sprinkle blueberries evenly over the top. Cover with foil and refrigerate for 5 hours or best overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Well February has turned out to be a busy month at French Vanilla. I decided to move my counter to the opposite side near the door to give more room for product. I wasn't sure at first if this was going to work but with a bit of trial and error we finally got the layout to work and I really like the way it has turned out. A Country French Christmas....

It's that time of year again and the store is all decorated for Christmas. The color scheme this year is mostly white, cream and grey (including silver) with a touch of aqua. Not your typical Christmas colors I know but I thought it would be nice to try something a little different this year and go with a more French Nordic theme.

I found these darling faux fur creations at the Toronto Gift Show last January and though they would be cute for my Christmas window display. From the comments I have received so far my customers think so too !

These are so fun, easy and inexpensive to make. However I can't take credit for the idea as it is an original design from Deb Kennedy of "Retreat Lifestyle Decor". Deb is obviously a very talented and creative person. She calls them her "Sweet Sweater Pumpkins". Using an old orange sweater from the Thrift Store, I followed Deb's instructions for making the pumpkins, then added my own personal touches. I used natural twine, curly stems from a "grape vine" and moss to give them a more rustic primitive look. I finished off by tying on a cute "Halloween Baby Witches" tag to the larger pumpkin.

The word autumn comes from the Old French word autompne (automne in modern French). Before the 16th century, harvest was the term usually used to refer to the season. However, as more people gradually moved from working the land to living in towns, the word harvest lost its reference to the time of year and came to refer only to the actual activity of reaping, and autumn, as well as fall, began to replace it as a reference to the season.The alternative word fall is now mostly a North American English word used to reference this time of year. FALL has to be my most favorite time of year. I love the change in colors and the crisp fresh air that only comes with the fall. Fall is also a great time for decorating. With Canadian Thanksgiving just around the corner and then Halloween this is the perfect time to introduce some fall colors. Incorporating colors like yellow, red, orange, gold and brown into your color scheme will allow you to transition easily from summer into fall. Fall "Garden Mums" are a great and inexpensive way to introduce fall colors. Whether you buy cut flowers for a table arrangement or the whole plant for your outdoor planters, they can add that punch of color to your fall decorating.

Another great way to add fall color is with a fall wreath to hang on either your front door or wall or use as a table centerpiece.

I had such a great time this past weekend, attending the "Barn House Flea Market" in Battleground Washington. We stayed at a nice clean and cheap (cost wise) Motel on the out skirts of Vancouver Washington. Got up bright and early Saturday morning to make our trek into the country to find the "Barn House Flea". Had our "google map" so as not to get lost. We arrived there at 8:15 am to get in line for the early bird entry which cost $5.00 (otherwise you have to wait until 11:00 to get in free). I'm so glad we did, as it didn't take long for line-ups to form and of course stuff goes quickly so you have to get in early to have the best selection. Lots of great vendors at this show....one of my new favorites being the "Queen of Tarte" where I treated myself to this darling hand-made ruffled hand bag-

and this cart liner which I just love. I purchased the cart in Victoria at a second hand store but needed a liner for it. I found the perfect one at the show.

Check out Teresa Sheeley's Blog who was also a vendor at the show for some great pictures taken at the Flea. Unfortunately I didn't find a lot of treasures for the store as the items I really wanted were just too large to fit in my SUV, however I did purchase some smaller things like a long vintage flour sack which will make a great cushion cover, hand-made french inspired flour sack tea towels, small burlap bags to make into lavender sachets, bulk bark cloth fabric to make cushion covers and lovely dried lavender bunches. It was so much fun to just poke around and look at all of the stuff creatively on display at this lovey country flea market. I would definately go again.

Summer is such a great time ....to enjoy the sun, work in the garden and of course ....go "junking". I love picking up old weathered garden furniture. Take this cute bistro set:

The paint was chipping off and the metal a bit rusty. The plastic fabric (although cheery) was cracking in several places. However with a little fresh paint and new fabric on the seats it is as good as new. I recovered the seats using beige indoor/outdoor fabric.

I have also been dying to try my hand at making my own cushions using the iron-on transfer technique. I made this "french inspired" cushion using burlap and toile fabric for the back. I love how this turned out and will definately be making more.

Missing the "Farm Chicks".......

Well I have to say that I got a little envious reading about the recent "Farm Chicks Show" held in Spokane Washington the first weekend in June. I attended last year, but the timing wasn't right to attend this year, so I had to content myself with reading about it on other blogs. Check it out here: http://thefarmchicks.typepad.com/. Last year I attended along with my sister and a friend for the first time and I have to say we had a blast! It was definately an experience. I love "junking" and was amazed at all of the neat and wonderful items for sale not to mention how over the top and creative the vendor booths were in which they sold their products. However this year, I am planning on attending the "The Barn House Flea Market" show to be held at the end of July on their farm near Battle Ground, Washington. A lot of the same vendors that were at the Farm Chicks show will also be at this show so I am excited. I have never been to a "Barn Boys" show although they were at the Farm Chicks last year and I loved their booth. I even purchased a few items from them to bring back with me. Stop and Smell the Roses...

After redoing my backyard garden about 3 years ago, the roses I planted are getting really big now and are so very pretty. They bloom all summer long and give the garden that "English Country Garden" look. I also love to cut my roses to display in a vase at home or in the store. However if you are like me, displaying your cut roses can be challenging. Sometimes they will droop or welt after placing in water. I found this great website http://www.roseinfo.info/cuttings.html that has some good information on rose cuttings with tips and instructions for helping them to last as long as possible. They recommend the following:

Remove any leaves that will be under water in the vase.
With the end of the flower stem under water, cut about an inch off the stem with a sharp knife. Cut at an angle. This will open the veins in the stem to allow more water to pass through.
Fill the vase about 3/4 to the top with fresh, room temperature to slightly warm water.
Add floral preservative to the water as indicated on the package. It comes with most floral arrangements
Arrange your flowers as you prefer.
Then leave them in a cool, dark room for a couple of hours to allow them to settle into their new home.
Always display your floral arrangement in a cool area.
Keep them out of direct sunlight.
Keep the water fresh. Change the water daily.
In the evening when you go to bed, place the flowers in a refrigerator if possible. Otherwise, find the coolest place in your home, perhaps the garage. But, do not leave them in any area which could reach the low thirties of freezing temperatures.
If your roses start to droop, fill your sink with water. Hold the stem under water and cut about an inch off the end at a slant. Lay the flower flat in the water and gently re-straighten the head. Keep the end of the stem under water. Leave the flower in the water for 30-45 minutes and it should harden in a straight position. Place the flower back into the vase.

Take a minute of your time to truly stop and smell the roses, whether they be in your garden or in a pretty vase sitting on your table.

French Milled Soap

Since opening the store I have become such a fan of 'French Milled Soap". When a new order of soap arrives, I love opening the boxes to release that wonderful sweet fragrance. What is French Milled or Triple Milled Soap you ask? The triple milling process was developed by French soap makers in the 1700s and thus receives its alternate name, French milled soap. The French people are one of the staunch supporters of aromatherapy. In fact the known originator of aromatherapy in the modern times is a Frenchman. They believed in the healing properties of aromatics from essential oils, herbs, spices and other alternative ways of achieving good health. It is no surprise then the French had innovated plenty of products related to aromatherapy, not just with candles but soap as well. Hence the French soap was born. Triple milled soaps, or French milled soaps, are made of a typical combination of a fatty acid (oil or fat) in reaction with lye (sodium hydrochloride). After the soap is made, it is dried into crystals, then rolled at least three times between large stainless steel rollers until a paste is formed. The paste is then pressed into soap molds, and triple milled soap is created. The triple milling process allows for soap that is completely uniform and smooth, without impurities, and is longer lasting than other types of soap produced.
One line of French Soap that I carry in the store is from "Mistral". Hand-crafted in the heart of Provence, France, Mistral soaps are made according to a three-hundred year old tradition of purity and excellence. Following a time honored know-how, or "savoir-faire," they produce the finest triple milled soaps in the world by carefully selecting the highest quality oils of olive, palm or coconut and combining them with skin-softening African shea butter, renowned for its protective, rejuvenating properties. Their quality craftsmanship produces pure vegetable soaps praised for a rich lather, silky texture, and exquisite fragrance.

Soon to arrive is one of my favorites from Mistral called "Lilac of May". This soap smells like you just picked a fresh bouquet right off the tree.

Lily of the Valley....a May Day Tradition in France

The French tradition of giving lily-of-the-valley flowers (Muguet-du-Bois) on May Day is believed to have begun on May 1st, 1561, when King Charles IX of France was presented with a bunch of lily-of-the-valley flowers as a token of luck and prosperity for the coming year. History does not record who it was that presented the king with this perfumed gift, but he took a shine to this idea and began the custom of presenting lily-of-the-valley flowers to the ladies of his court each year on May 1st. From around 1900, it became traditional in France for men to present a bouquet of lily-of-the-valley flowers to their sweethearts to express their love and affection. Nowadays “muguet” flowers are also given as a general token of appreciation between close friends and family members as a way to wish them good luck and happiness for the year ahead.

I love this time of year......Spring.....out with the old and in with the new. Time to get out in the garden to do some clipping, pruning and weeding in preparation for new life that has already started to appear. Here in Victoria we are at least 3-6 weeks ahead of schedule then normally seen at this time of year due to the milder climate we have had this past winter. I've been doing some Spring cleaning in the store as well. Moving things around to make room for new items as they arrive. I haven't officially started decorating for Easter as yet, hope to do so this week, however I do have a few items out as a teaser for what's to come. Olympic Fever...Canadian Style

I must say that I am a little sad that the games have come to an end. I really enjoyed watching the various events, more so with these games then I have ever watched before. In the final event on Sunday we witnessed a nail biting hockey game for the Gold between Canada and the US. I couldn't believe it when the US scored a goal with less than 30 seconds on the clock until the end of the third period to tie the game at 2-2. But as we have seen at these Winter games anything is possible! Canada went on to win the gold during sudden death overtime 3-2. I wish I had been in downtown Vancouver at that moment, it must have been electrifying!

John Furlong, CEO of Vancouver 2010 said, "I believe we Canadians tonight are stronger, more united, more in love with our country, and more connected with each other than ever before. These Olympic Games have lifted us up. That quiet, humble national pride we were sometimes reluctant to acknowledge seemed to take to the streets as the most beautiful kind of patriotism broke out all across our country". By winning the final event of the Vancouver Olympics, Canada earned its 14th gold medal — the most by any country at any Winter Olympics. I am one proud Canadian! Go...ld Canada Go...ld!

Well I've been back from the Gift and Tableware Show held in Toronto for several weeks now but haven't had time to update my blog until now. The show was great, very inspiring. I loved seeing all of the new color trends for 2010 such as Blues, Greens, Greys and Purples. With an emphasis on going "green" more natural tones such as Beige and Mocha Brown are also coming back into play. I did several new product orders for spring and summer and even a couple for Christmas. Below is a sample of some of the new products recently arrived at the store:

Canadian Gift and Tableware Show....

I'm off to Toronto tomorrow morning for 4 days to attend the Canadian Gift and Tableware Show. This is the largest event of it's kind in Canada. I'll be looking for new and exciting items for the store for 2010. I'll also be ordering for Christmas which seems a little crazy I know, but you have to order early or the manufacturers sell out. January can be a tough month...cold/rainy weather, grey skies, dark/shorter days, fading Christmas memories and failed New Year's resolutions can all conspire to get us down. When we should be feeling excited at the prospect of the year ahead, many of us are finding January a struggle. Deck the Halls.......

The elves have been busy this past week, getting the store decked out in all it's holiday glitz and glitter! New this year are the cutest 36"feather trees available in both apple green and white. The great thing is that they colaspe flat for easy storage. As with past years also returning for this holiday season are the ever so popular vintage inspired Christmas ornaments, including a large selection of smaller Feather, Tinsel and Bottle Brush trees.

We've been busy with Halloween at French Vanilla. The last of the vintage inspired Halloween decorations have come in and are now almost gone. So glad to see they have been such a big hit this year and judging by the number of people who have come into the store looking to add to their collection I'd say decorating for Halloween is definately on the rise. Christmas items have started to arrive as well. However setting up for Christmas must wait until after Halloween. I know some stores have already started putting out their Christmas items but I like to finish up with each seasonal event before moving on to the next. I know it's a little early to start thinking about Halloween. Canadians usually wait to get through Thanksgiving (it's earlier here than in the US) before they focus on decorating for Halloween. However I do have several customers who plan on decorating for Halloween this coming week. Although not as popular as Christmas, decorating for Halloween is getting more popular in Canada. As for me, I love the Vintage style ornaments reminiscent of days gone by. My sister got me hooked on these several years ago. Folk Artists like Dee Foust, Bethany Lowe, Wendy Addison and Nicol Sayre are among my favorite. Below are a few examples of the wonderful whimsical Halloween ornaments that have recently arrived in the store. The designated date for Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. This year that day falls on October 12th. Thanksgiving for families is simply about spending time decorating the house, preparing all of the Thanksgiving food (and of course the dinner!) as well as enjoying a long weekend before the onset of Winter. To add some interest and color to your table for Thanksgiving, try some of these simple Do It Yourself centerpieces courtesy of "About.com":

-this minimalist centerpiece can be made in minutes. Set a pillar candle into the center of your bowl. Secure it with florist putty or candle wax tabs if necessary. Make two rows of fruit or vegetables around the candle. Small items will work best. Here they have chosen some baby artichokes and some very small lemons, but tangerines, limes, or any other item could also work.

Decorating for Fall with Wreaths....

It's official......the first day of Autumn is Sept. 22nd. I love this time of year, when the leaves start to turn, the air is fresh and crisp as our days get shorter and the evenings cooler. Decorating at this time of the year is also fun. I always change my front door wreath to something more in keeping with this time of year. I have a thing for wreaths, I hang them all over my home. I love making them too so I thought I would post some simple wreath ideas that you could make yourself. To get started all you need is a wreath form (made of grapevine, styrofoam, or metal), some floral wire and a glue gun. The next thing to do is to gather your wreath material. Use your imagination and work with seasonal colors. Material can be gathered from nature, the grocery store or from a craft store. It has been a very busy summer and with August almost over, my hubby and I decided to take a break and got away for a few days last week. We have a friend that has a fairly new beautiful West Coast Style cabin (well more like a house) on Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island(approx. 1 1/2 - 2 hrs drive from Victoria). They are very generous in letting us use their cabin several times a year. Although the weather wasn't great, it was a little overcast some days and we had a bit of rain but the break was well needed for both of us. We had dinner with friends, watched a movie and just chilled. I've added a few photo's (although not mine) as I wanted you to see how beautiful this lake is. You just have to ignore the forest clear-cutting that's happening on the mountain across the lake (such a shame).

We're having a heat wave....

I don't usually talk about the weather, but we recently had a heat wave in this part of the country. It actually got up into the 90's (35 c) and although we usually have warm summers, having it this hot is not something Victorian's are used to! I even had to close the store one afternoon as just got too hot with no air conditioning. I'm sure for my customers it was like shopping in a sauna. Not very pleasant and definately not good for business! I spoke to couple of ladies in the store who were visiting from Flordia. They had come to Victoria to escape the heat, but unfortunatley it was just as hot here. Worried about my garden I kept watering to keep it from welting away. We are on water restriction so all watering has to done mostly by hand which was no easy task. But my garden is doing okay, the lawn is a little dry and brown in some spots, but the plants, shrubs are hanging in there and the roses are as beautiful as ever (actually I think roses like the heat). Thankfully we've finally had some relief from the hot weather, things are back to normal, it's much cooler now....today it looks like it might even rain!

Small World.....

I have always thought it's a pretty small world, especially when you start talking or networking with people and find that one connection; friends, family or other things you may have in common. Well that became even more apparent to me this week. Last week I had a customer in my store who purchased a couple of pillows. Her name is Tamara Jensen and she was only visiting Victoria for the day (she and her husband live on the mainland). She asked me if I could send her cushions via Greyhound to her home so she didn't have to carry them around all day. I said sure, I'd be happy to do that for you! She also asked me if she could take a few pictures of my store for her "blog". I said sure and advised her that I had a blog as well. Well she recently sent me an email (she also posted on my blog) that she received the cushions and that she had posted on her blog about her visit to Victoria along with a few pictures of my store. As I was reading her blog post I noticed a comment was left on this post by Debi Ward Kennedy http://retreatdesign.blogspot.com/ that one of the pictures she had posted of my store showed a bench that her husband had made from two old hitchcock chairs and that I .....get this.... had purchased this bench when I visited their booth at the Farm Chicks show! You never know how, when or if paths will cross again of people we meet as we go about our daily lives, but when it does it always amazes me. Is this a small world or what!

Well June has come and gone. It was a very busy month for me. My sister came for a visit so along with my friend Eva, we decided to take a road trip to the "Farm Chicks Show" held each year in Spokane Washington.

If you haven't heard of the Farm Chicks http://www.thefarmchicks.com/ they are two ladies who share a passion for junking, baking, and creating fun projects. Together they founded The Farm Chicks Show, created Farm Chick Style™ and are Contributing Editors for Country Living Magazine.

To my surprise I even came across Teresa Sheeley's lovely booth. I have been selling Teresa's lovely hand-made Flour Sack Tea Towels and Cushion Covers in the store for a while now. Below is one of her new designs, which I have on order. Can't wait for these to arrive....so cute!

All in all it was a great day and lots of fun! We even managed to purchase a few items (actually my SUV was packed to the hills). Would have loved to bring back more furniture if I had a U-haul or trailer, hmmm........maybe next year.

The Retail Challenge

I wanted to bring to your attention a movement or call it a challenge that was first put forth by a Canadian women via her blog site called "Not a Shopaholic". Her name is Christina. On her blog site http://notashopaholic.blogspot.com/ she issued a "Retail Challenge" to encourage support of small independant businesses during this time of economic downturn. This challenge was created out of necessity to get the message out that if you want your favorite brick and mortar stores to survive, you must support them! It’s about funneling revenue back into the local community. If half of the Canadian population* spent $100 every month, that would generate $1 660 634 800 into the Canadian economy.

If $100 is too much, spend $50 or whatever you can afford. Anything is better than nothing. To take up this challenge all you have to do is pick 3 independently locally owned businesses you would miss if they disappeared. Stop in. Say hello. Buy something that makes you smile. Your purchases are what keeps those businesses around. We can all do our part to help strengthen the local economy by patronizing local small businesses in our community. I know I am. As a small business owner I really appreciate my customers especially those who have continued to support my business during this tough economic time.

I have always been a fan of "toile". Toile de Jouy, sometimes abbreviated to simply "toile" (pronounced "twall"), is a type of decorating pattern consisting of a usually white or off-white background generally depicting a charming scene of country life. Toile de Jouy originated in France in the late 1700s. In the French language, the phrase literally means "cloth from Jouy-en-Josas", a town of north-central France. Although it has been continuously produced since then, it experienced a marked upsurge in popularity around the year 2000. Toile fabric is ideal for French country, romantic country or Provencal decors. Toile comes in many fabrics and colors and instantly dresses up any room. It can be used in a variety of ways to add some distinctive french style to your home, from the bathroom shower curtain to the dining room wallpaper. If you're timid, toile is not for you: you can't use just a little. And don't use another busy fabric along with toile. Instead complement it with small checks and stripes or a plain, bold color.

Family Traditions

I have wonderful memories from past Easter's when I was growing up. I remember getting a multi-colored straw Easter Basket filled with all kinds of goodies. We also had an Easter Egg hunt inside the house early Easter Sunday morning which was always fun and a bit of a competition between my sister and I as to who could find the most eggs (which were actually jelly beans). And coloring our hard boiled eggs was a must before eating them for breakfast. When I had children of my own I carried on the same Easter traditions with them and I'm sure they will carry on some of the same traditions with their children. I think that's why I love all of the vintage inspired Easter decorations especially those from Artists such as Bethany Lowe, Dee Foust and Teena Flanner as they remind me of Easter's past when I was a child. I have been bringing in these whimsical vintage inspired Easter decorations since opening the store and now have quite a number of customers who have also become a fan of nostalgic holiday memorabilia.

Spring is coming....

I can hardly wait for spring this year. Not sure why, maybe it's all this doom and gloom we are hearing in the news about the economy. It's nice to just forget all that and enjoy life! I am so looking forward to warmer weather and getting out in my garden. I love gardening even though I haven't had as much time to garden over the last couple of years with running the store. I live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Victoria is called the "City of Gardens" which it truly is. Being the warmest part of Canada we can grow plants here that wouldn't survive in other parts of Canada as it's too cold. Like the clematis shown below which is a climbing vine type plant that usually blooms in the spring to early summer period.

and beautiful Roses like these that grew in my garden last year. I like adding structural elements in a garden, such things as a pergola, fountains, bird houses, statues and of course urns. It adds interest and a bit of whimsy, giving it that "english country garden or "french garden" feel. and don't forget to set up a daybed for lazing in the sun reading a good book or having a cat nap on a Sunday afternoon.....

To paint or not to paint..that is the question!

Well I finally finished painting the store and re-arranging some of the display furniture. I must say that I do love the new color. It reminds me of chocolate milk and looks great with all the cream I have in the store. It can be hard choosing a new paint color, but I feel sometimes you just have to go for it and use your instincts. If you don't like it, it's only paint, you can always change it again. It amazes me how a little paint can change the whole look of a room or even furniture. So if your tired of the same old same old, then paint .....you'll be happy you did!

Well 2008 has come to an end and a new year has begun. Thanks so much to all of my loyal customers who helped make this past year such a great success! I look forward to your continued patronage in 2009. As with any new year we can expect changes and new challenges. I personally like changes, it keeps things interesting. So to start the year off I have decided to make some minor changes to my store. In mid January I will be closing the store for approx. one week to renovate. I will be changing the wall paint color as well as reorganizing the store lay-out and display areas. I'm excited about this new look which will be more elegant French Chateau Chic than French Country Provencal.

The look will be softer with more muted neutral tones such as cream, beige, grey and black with punches of seasonal color here and there. I have always loved this look and therefore look forward to the transformation......hope my customers do to!! When I'm done I'll post some pictures, so stay tuned.....

It's always fun for me decorating at this time of year. Here are a few photos of the store all decked out for Xmas. The color scheme this year is mainly white, silver and gold. Although I have done a small section of the store and a table setting in the traditional red and green but with a twist. I used lime green this year along with the darker green which I love.

Now that I have my own store, I have been so fortunate to meet some really talented people. Eva Mundy is no exception. She is a local artist who does Mosaic work as well as other vintage inspired items such as Chandelier's, Candle Holders, Wall Plaques, Decorative Hooks and much more exclusively for resale in my store. But Eva is also an accomplished designer and decorator. She and her husband moved to Vancouver Island from Calgary, Alberta five years ago and settled in Duncan, B.C. a small city (about 1.5 hrs drive from Victoria). They purchased an old farm house which was in need of some real T.L.C.. This has been their passion for the past 5 years and what a fabulous job they have done (and are still doing). The last time I visited Eva I took some pictures as I wanted to post them on my blog so my readers could also see this beautiful inspirational home that really is the definition of (I hesitate to use the term "Shabby Chic" as I think this term is so over used) so I'm going to say "Elegant Chic". Enjoy!!!

My customers are often asking me what my home looks like after seeing my store. So I thought I would post a few pictures of my home and style of decorating which is French Country. I love color but not on the walls. I keep my walls pretty neutral, except in the dining room which is a bright yellow and then add punches of color here and there by way of furnishings and accessories. I love the French Country style which to me is rustic elegance. It's casual, cozy and warm! Living Room...... Kitchen and Dining Room...

Canadian Thanksgiving!

In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. This year it will be celebrated on October 13th/08. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north. During the American Revolution, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings such as the cornucopia and the pumpkin pie. Over the years many dates were used for Thanksgiving, the most popular was the 3rd Monday in October. After World War I, both Armistice Day and Thanksgiving were celebrated on the Monday of the week in which November 11th occurred. Ten years later, in 1931, the two days became separate holidays and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day.Finally, on January 31st, 1957, Parliament proclaimed..."A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed ... to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.

Vintage Inspired Seasonal Decorations

I love fall.....the crisp air and beautiful fall colors that nature has to offer. I always look forward to decorating at this time of the year. My sister got me hooked on Vintage Inspired Folk Art decorations. Especially the ones made from paper mache with just a touch of fine glass glitter. Artists such as Dee Foust, Wendy Addison and Teena Flanner are among my favorites. Decorating for Halloween has never been more fun! To add a touch of whimsy to your home this Halloween look for these wonderful decorations in store beginning of October. I know you too will become a fan when you see these wonderful collectible original works of art!

Making a Lavender Wand...

I love lavender and as I love to make things I am always trying new crafts. This year my Lavender was beautiful mainly due to the wonderful warm weather we have been having here on the West Coast. So I decided to try and make a 'Lavender Wand". Something a little different from the usual lavender sachets. I found great instructions on the web and gave it a try. It isn't as hard as it looks. After just a couple of test wands I was happy with the results. They make great little gifts for family and friends. Here are the instructions for those of you that may want to give it a try:

Gather the lavender stems (approx. 16 or 18) together in a bundle (keep the stems fairly long). Make sure your lavender is not too dry when picking as you want the stems to be supple. You can even let your lavender welt a bit before using. Remove all the leaves so your stems are clean and tie the bundle together with a long piece of ribbon (1/4"wide) right under the flower heads. Your ribbon should have one end longer than the other. You are going to use the long end to wrap your wand and the short end can be tucked in to the lavender flowers. Now hold the lavender in one hand so the stems are up and the flower heads are pointing down. At the spot just above where you tied the ribbon you gently bend down each stem over the flower heads keeping them evenly spaced around the flower head. Keep doing this until all of the stems are bent down(it looks like a little cage with the flower heads inside). Still holding your lavender in one hand take the long ribbon end and at the point where you bent the stems over the flower heads start to weave the ribbon in and out. Put the ribbon over 2 stems then under 2 stems, over 2 and under 2. The stems that were over the ribbon before will be under the ribbon on the next row (just like a basket weave). Keep your ribbon really tight, pulling in as you weave your rows. Make sure you weave close to the row above so there's no gap. As the lavender dries the ribbon will loosen a bit and you don't want to have any gaps as the lavender buds can fall out. Keep doing this until the flower heads are completely encased within the ribbon and stems. To finish your wand off, wrap the ribbon tightly 3 or 4 times around the stems and tie it off with a bow. Cut the ends of the stems evenly to the desired length.....and voilà you're done!

French at Heart...

Because I have a "French Country" store my customers often ask me if I'm French? My response is "no I'm actually of Welsh and English heritage". What is it about "old world charm" when it comes to decorating? I love the French Country look. To me it's romantic, casual yet elegant with just a touch of rustic flair thrown in. I love the warm colors of Provence... yellows, orange reds, greens, periwinkle blue. I always paint my furniture cream (not in to the dark wood tones other than on my floor) then distress and antique it a little. And of course you must have a touch of black or dark brown thrown in to ground the space like a wrought iron chandelier with crystals hanging down. And no Country French home would be complete without flowers. Any kind of flowers will work, but don’t forget to include a bunch of lavender here and there to really get the feel of the French countryside. Yes, I may have been born in Canada but I really am "French at Heart".
